Behind the Craft: Meet Barco Carpintero, the Kobe Artisans

Today, we are excited to introduce “Barco Carpintero”, an artisanal leather workshop nestled in Kobe, Japan. You might already know them as the creative and crafting hands behind lemma, a brand we’ve introduced in a previous post.

From carefully selected premium European leathers to their own silky-smooth, custom-tanned Japanese hides, every wallet, bag, and leather accessory is crafted entirely by hand by a dedicated artisan from start to finish.

Their collection features a variety of leathers—some develop a rich patina over time, while others maintain their clean, original look for years. Depending on the piece, the artisan meticulously adjusts the thickness of the leather and alters the edge-finishing techniques, seamlessly transitioning between herikaeshi (folded edge) and kirime (cut/burnished edge). Because of this thoughtful approach, even items made from the exact same leather take on entirely unique characters and charming textures.
